How it works

How JyotishiVani works: one standard method for every reading

Two astrologers can read the same chart differently because they use different settings, different definitions and no written method. JyotishiVani fixes all three: the settings are published, the definitions are named, and the reading follows the classical method, the same way every time.

Four promises behind every answer

  • Calculated, never guessed

Every planet, house, lord, dasha, yoga and score comes from a calculation with Swiss Ephemeris precision. The AI explains your chart; it never makes any of it up.

  • Checked before you see it

Every statement about your chart is checked against the calculation before it reaches you. Dates must match the periods they belong to, and nothing unverified gets through.

  • The classical method

Readings follow the sequence of judgement in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Phaladeepika, Saravali and the Jaimini Sutras, the same steps in the same order for every question.

  • Honest about your birth time

If something in your chart depends on a more exact birth time than you have, the app says so instead of presenting it as fact.

The conventions, published

Two astrologers who use different settings will draw different charts from the same birth details. These are ours, for every chart, every time.

They are the reason two JyotishiVani readings of the same chart agree, and the reason you can compare ours with any other software: set the same conventions and the positions should match to within seconds of arc. Why these settings matter.

The method: nine steps, in order

The classical texts describe how to judge any matter in a chart. Vani follows that sequence for every question, so the same question about the same chart is always worked the same way.

1. HousesThe houses of the matter and the planets in or aspecting themThe 10th, with the 2nd, 6th and 11th

When your birth time is uncertain

You tell the app how sure you are of your birth time: exact, within about 15 minutes, about an hour, the part of the day, or unknown.

The app then works out which parts of your chart that uncertainty could change, such as a lagna near a sign edge or a Moon near the end of a nakshatra, and treats them as uncertain. No reading relies on them, and tables say “depends on birth time” instead of guessing.

What Vani will not do

These rules hold in every answer, in every language.

  • Predict death, lifespan, illness or medical outcomes, or anyone else’s
  • Say whether a baby will be a boy or a girl, which is illegal to determine in India
  • Confirm black magic, curses or the evil eye, or help harm or control another person
  • Sell or prescribe remedies, gemstones or pujas
  • Invent a method it does not offer: KP sub-lords, chara dasha and muhurta selection get a plain “not available”
  • Do anything that is not astrology, or claim to be human

If someone is in distress

Messages that suggest self-harm are never answered with astrology. Vani replies with support and helplines: in India, Tele-MANAS on 14416 (free, 24 hours, many languages) and 112 in an emergency; Samaritans on 116 123 in the UK and Ireland; 988 in the US; and findahelpline.com elsewhere.

What happens to your data

Birth details are personal. They are stored to calculate your chart, protected, and deleted when you ask.

Read the privacy policy

  • Birth details, names, messages and answers are encrypted in our database
  • Each account can only ever reach its own data
  • Someone else’s details are saved only after you confirm their consent
  • Your phone’s location is approximate, rounded to about a kilometre
  • Delete a person, a conversation or your whole account at any time

What it does not do yet

Being honest about the limits is part of the method.

  • Muhurta selection. The app shows each day’s panchang and timings, but it does not yet rank dates for an event.
  • KP sub-lords, chara and Narayana dasha, varshaphal. Asked about these, Vani says they are not available rather than improvising.
  • Depth of interpretation. Calculations and stated facts are reliable (all 27,182 calculated values agreed, and 99.6% of chart statements were correct, in our latest benchmark); weighing every factor an astrologer would is where we keep improving. See the results.

Questions about the method

Is JyotishiVani an AI or a human astrologer?

Vani, the astrologer you talk to, is an AI, and says so if you ask. Your chart itself is not written by the AI: it is calculated with Swiss Ephemeris precision, read by the classical method, and every chart statement is checked against that calculation before you see it.

Which ayanamsa does JyotishiVani use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the ayanamsa adopted by the Indian government's Calendar Reform Committee and the most widely used in India. On 1 January 2026 it was 24°13′.

Why whole-sign houses?

Whole-sign houses, where each sign is one house counted from the lagna, are how houses are read in the Parashari tradition as most astrologers practise it, and they apply the same way in every divisional chart. Using one system everywhere is what keeps readings consistent.

What if I do not know my birth time?

You still get everything that does not depend on it: your Moon sign (unless the Moon changed sign that day), today’s panchang and the transits counted from your Moon. Dashas, Sade Sati dates and matching need a time within about two hours; divisional charts, yogas and doshas need about fifteen minutes. The app tells you what each extra bit of precision unlocks.

Does Vani ever guess?

Vani never states a chart fact that was not calculated. If a method is not available, such as KP sub-lords or muhurta selection, it says so plainly instead of improvising. If a value could change within the uncertainty of your birth time, it is described as uncertain.
