Saturn’s sidereal sign changes (Lahiri ayanamsa) computed with Swiss Ephemeris, dates in IST. A cycle runs from Saturn’s first entry into the 12th sign from the Moon to its final exit from the 2nd.

The three phases

Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so Sade Sati (“seven and a half”) has three phases of about two and a half years each. When Saturn turns retrograde near a sign boundary it can step back into the previous sign for a few months, so a phase can pause and resume; the tables on each Moon sign’s page show every one of those stays.

PhaseSaturn inHow the tradition reads it
RisingThe 12th sign from your MoonExpenses, rest and endings; time to finish things and reduce commitments
PeakYour Moon signResponsibility, discipline and steady effort, felt most directly
SettingThe 2nd sign from your MoonFamily, speech and savings; consolidating what the period taught

These are tendencies described by classical texts on gochara (transits), such as Phaladeepika. They are read together with the rest of the chart, above all the running dasha, and they are not misfortunes. At any time three of the twelve Moon signs are in Sade Sati, so roughly one person in four is going through it.

Shani dhaiya: kantaka and ashtama Shani

Saturn’s stays in the 4th sign from the Moon (kantaka Shani) and the 8th (ashtama Shani) last about two and a half years each and are called dhaiya in North India. On 11 October 2026:

Which Moon sign is yours?

Sade Sati is counted from your Moon sign (rashi), the sidereal sign the Moon was in when you were born, not your Western Sun sign. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days, so on a little over half of all days the date of birth settles it; if the Moon changed sign on your birthday, you need the birth time as well. JyotishiVani works it out from your birth details. Not sure why your sign differs from a Western horoscope? Read Vedic vs Western astrology.

Sade Sati in the app

The app shows your own phases with dates, explains what each means for your chart, and can remind you once, a month before Sade Sati begins. You can also ask Vani how to prepare; it will not sell you a remedy.

Questions about Sade Sati

Which rashis are in Sade Sati in 2026?

With Saturn in Pisces since 29 March 2025, Sade Sati is running for Aries (Mesha), Aquarius (Kumbha) and Pisces (Meena) Moon signs. The next to begin is Taurus, on 3 June 2027.

Is Sade Sati always bad?

No. The classical texts read Saturn’s transit over the Moon as a demanding period that asks for responsibility, patience and steady effort, not as a misfortune. It is also common: at any moment about one person in four is in Sade Sati, because three of the twelve Moon signs always are.

Can Sade Sati cause death?

No chart, and no transit, can predict a death, and JyotishiVani never attempts to. Fear about Sade Sati is often used to sell remedies; the texts describe it as a period of effort and maturity, not of disaster.

Is Sade Sati the same as Shani mahadasha?

No. Sade Sati is a transit: where Saturn is now, counted from your natal Moon, and it comes to everyone roughly every 30 years. Shani mahadasha is a dasha period of 19 years determined by your birth chart, and not everyone runs it in a lifetime. They can overlap, but they are read separately.

Why do websites give different Sade Sati dates?

Mostly because of Saturn’s retrograde returns. When Saturn moves back into the previous sign for a few months, some tables end the phase at the first exit and others at the last. These dates follow Saturn into and out of every sign, computed with Swiss Ephemeris (Lahiri ayanamsa) in IST.

What is Shani dhaiya?

Dhaiya (“two and a half”) is Saturn’s stay of about two and a half years in the 4th sign from your Moon (kantaka Shani) or the 8th (ashtama Shani). Like Sade Sati, it is read as a period that asks for patience, not as a misfortune.
